Haazri 2026 tribute to Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan
Haazri 2026 tribute to Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan

Mumbai witnessed something truly rare at Haazri 2026, where an evening of music turned into moments of collective reverence. Held at a completely packed Jio World Garden in BKC, the evening became a living homage to the towering legacy of Padma Vibhushan Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan, as his illustrious students and some of the greatest voices of our time came together on one stage, for the first time ever!

In an atmosphere thick with emotion and gratitude, legends A.R. Rahman, Hariharan, Sonu Nigam and Shaan shared the stage in a once-in-a-lifetime coming together, not as stars, but as shaagirds, united in their ‘haazri’ to their beloved Ustad on his fifth barsi (death anniversary).

The evening unfolded seamlessly under the thoughtful curation and organisation of Namrata Gupta Khan and Rabbani Mustafa Khan, Ustad Sahab’s daughter-in-law and son, who have quietly and consistently carried his legacy forward with grace, dignity and devotion under their brainchild NR Talent and Event Management.

A.R. Rahman opened the evening with a soul-stirring Sufi set that instantly transformed the venue into a space of prayer and surrender. He moved audiences with Kun Faya Kun, Khwaja Mere Khwaja, Arziyan, before joining the Mustafa brothers Qadir Mustafa, Murtuza Mustafa and Rabbani Mustafa and Ustad’s grandsons Faiz Mustafa and Zain Mustafa for a deeply moving rendition of Aao Balma and Piya Haji Ali… a moment that felt timeless and sacred.

Shaan brought warmth, nostalgia and sheer joy to the evening with Main Hoon Don, Chand Sifarish and Om Shanti Om. He also sang a beautiful rendition of Khan Sahab’s ghazal Chale Aao.

Hariharan followed with melodies that have shaped generations, including songs like Tu Hi Re, Roja, Bahon Ke Darmiyan, and Yaadein, each song received with thunderous applause. While Sonu Nigam closed the musical arc with an emotionally charged set featuring Pardesiya, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin and Sandese Aate Hain, leaving the audience visibly moved.

The night saw the presence of several distinguished guests from the worlds of cinema, culture and music, including Smita Thackeray, Babil Khan with mother Sutapa Sikdar, Shefali Shah, Ronit Bose Roy with Neelam Bose Roy, Kritika Kamra, Adarsh Gourav, Kavita Seth with son Kanishk, Neha Dhupia, Vishal Jethwa, Akshay Oberoi with his family, Shweta Tripathi, Javed Jaffrey, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Raju Singh, Sherley Singh, Reshma Merchant, Shibani Kashyap, Prachee Shah Pandya, Paras Chhabra, Sonnalli Seygall, Raai Laxmi among many others.

In a moving moment, Ustad Sahab’s family – his sons and daughters, felicitated the legendary artists on stage.

As the final notes faded, one truth resonated clearly through the night… legacies don’t end… they echo, through students, through songs, and through moments like these!

PCOS vs PCOD: Symptoms, Causes, Diet & Treatment for Women

PCOS vs PCOD symptoms, causes and hormonal health awareness in women
PCOS vs PCOD: Symptoms, Causes, Diet & Treatment for Women
Today, PCOS/PCOD is one of the leading causes of infertility and lifestyle-related hormonal disorders in women. PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) and PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) are common hormonal disorders affecting women of reproductive age (15–45 years). They involve hormonal imbalance, irregular ovulation, and metabolic disturbances, which can impact menstrual cycles, fertility, skin, weight, and mental health. PCOS vs PCOD – Are They the Same? PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) PCOD means the ovaries do not release eggs regularly because of hormonal imbalance, leading to irregular periods and small cysts in the ovaries. Severity– mild to moderate Cause-lifestyle and hormonal imbalance Fertility impact– usually manageable PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) PCOS is a hormonal condition where imbalance of hormones affects ovaries, periods, weight, skin, and overall metabolism. Severity-more severe Cause– genetic + metabolic + hormonal Fertility impact– may cause infertility PCOS is more serious than PCOD, though the terms are often used interchangeably. Common Symptoms of PCOS & PCOD Menstrual Symptoms • Irregular periods • Missed periods (amenorrhea) • Heavy or prolonged bleeding Physical Symptoms • Weight gain (especially abdominal) • Excess facial/body hair (hirsutism) • Acne and oily skin • Hair thinning or hair fall (male-pattern baldness) Metabolic & Emotional Symptoms • Fatigue • Mood swings • Anxiety or depression • Cravings and sugar addiction Reproductive Symptoms • Difficulty conceiving • Delayed ovulation • Recurrent miscarriages Main Causes of PCOS & PCOD 1. Hormonal Imbalance Increased male hormones (androgens) disturb ovulation and cause irregular periods, acne, and excess hair growth. 2. Insulin Resistance The body does not use insulin properly, leading to high insulin levels, which trigger more hormone imbalance and ovarian problems. 3. Genetic Factors PCOS/PCOD can run in families. If the mother or sister has it, the risk is higher. 4. Unhealthy Lifestyle Poor diet, lack of exercise, stress, and irregular sleep worsen hormonal imbalance. 5. Weight Gain & Obesity Extra body fat increases insulin resistance and hormone disturbance. 6. Stress Chronic stress affects hormone control centers in the brain.
PCOD and PCOS happen when hormones and insulin are not balanced, causing the ovaries to work irregularly, insulin resistance, genetic tendency, and lifestyle factors.

Anant Samagam Edition 2 Brings Rajasthan, Bengal & Assam Together in Delhi
Anant Samagam Edition 2 Brings Rajasthan, Bengal & Assam Together in Delhi

Following the successful inaugural edition in 2024, Aalekh Foundation presents the second edition of its flagship cultural festival, Anant Samagam, to be held from 30th January to 1st February 2026 at Travancore Palace, New Delhi.

The preview will be held on the 30th January 2026 and it’s open for all on 31st January & 01st February 2026.

Anant Samagam – Edition 2 is envisioned as an East–West cultural confluence, bringing together the rich and diverse traditions of Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Assam. Building on the success of Edition 1 (Kerala × North East), this edition deepens the curatorial scope to explore historical, artistic, and philosophical connections between India’s desert, delta, and riverine cultures.

Designed as an immersive, multidisciplinary experience, the festival brings together music, visual arts, handloom and craft, fashion, food, and critical dialogue, positioning heritage as a living, evolving practice rather than static preservation.

Dates: January 31st & February 01st 2026

Timing: 11:00 am to 10:00 pm

Venue: Travancore Palace, Shrimant Madhav Rao Scindia Marg, Copernicus Marg, New Delhi 110001

Music & Performances

The three-day festival will feature evening concerts by:

  • Kutle Khan, renowned Manganiyar folk singer from Rajasthan
  • Fakira Band, celebrated for their contemporary interpretation of Bengali folk traditions

Together, these performances create a sonic dialogue between East and West—rooted in folk traditions while resonating with contemporary audiences.

Art Exhibition

The visual art exhibition is presented in partnership with Sameksha Art Gallery and curated by Yamini Telkar. The exhibition brings together contemporary artists whose practices engage with memory, material culture, region, and identity, creating a nuanced dialogue between traditional reference points and contemporary expression.

Panel Discussions & Cultural Dialogues

Anant Samagam – Edition 2 will also host a series of curated panel discussions and conversations featuring experts, practitioners, and thinkers from the fields of literature, media and visual arts, cinema, craft traditions, and cultural studies.

These sessions aim to foster meaningful dialogue around themes such as cultural continuity, regional aesthetics, storytelling traditions, contemporary interpretations of heritage, and the role of culture in shaping modern India. The discussions are designed to engage both practitioners and audiences, positioning Anant Samagam as a space for reflection as much as celebration.

Fashion, Craft & Culinary Experiences

The festival includes:

  • Handloom and craft showcase highlighting Bandhani, Jamdani, and Muga silk
  • A curated fashion showcase translating indigenous textiles into contemporary design narratives
  • Regional food counters and curated culinary trails celebrating the flavours of Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Assam

This edition will feature a distinguished lineup of designers whose work strongly reflects regional heritage and contemporary aesthetics:

  • Pallavi Jaipur (Rajasthan)
  • Jahnabi Phookan (Assam)
  • Sonam Dubal (Fusion of Assam & Rajasthan)
  • Bappaditya Biswas (West Bengal)

Artisans, designers, chefs, and cultural practitioners remain central to the festival’s ethos, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability, livelihood creation, and cultural preservation.

“Anant Samagam was conceived as a platform where India’s cultures engage in meaningful conversation rather than exist in isolation. After the quiet, introspective dialogue between Kerala and the North East in our first edition, Edition 2 brings together Rajasthan, Bengal, and Assam—regions deeply connected through trade, textiles, music, and spiritual thought. Alongside performances and exhibitions, the inclusion of panel discussions allows us to reflect, question, and contextualise culture in today’s world.” — Dr. Rennie Joyy, Founder, Aalekh Foundation

At Aalekh, our focus is on identifying and supporting emerging artists who are already grounded in serious practice and ready to step into larger cultural conversations. Through Anant Samagam, we are creating a platform where this next generation of artists engages with institutions, galleries, and audiences in a meaningful way. As Art Director and a participating artist, my role has been to shape this bridge—between intent and execution, tradition and contemporary expression, and emerging talent and the wider art ecosystem.” — Divyaman Singh, Art Director, Aalekh Foundation

Sonakshi Sinha’s Horror-Mystery Nikita Roy Now Streaming on JioHotstar

Sonakshi Sinha in Nikita Roy horror mystery film now streaming on JioHotstar
Sonakshi Sinha in Nikita Roy horror mystery film now streaming on JioHotstar

After releasing in the theaters last year, Kussh S. Sinha’s directorial debut film – Nikita Roy, a horror-mystery is now streaming on JioHotstar. The film stars Sonakshi Sinha in the lead role with Paresh Rawal, Suhail Nayyar and Arjun Rampal playing titular characters. In a world that’s torn between logic and belief, Nikita Roy walks the grey line dividing them—going through the chilling maze of deception, fear and supernatural intrigue.

Directed by Kussh S. Sinha and produced by Kinjal Ashok Ghone, Nicky Khemchand Bhaganani, Kartos Entertainment, Kussh S Sinha, Ankur Vijay Takrani, Vicky Khemchand Bhagnani, Dinesh Ratitram Gupta, the story follows Nikita Roy, a debunker of supernatural myths and superstitious beliefs. When her brother dies under mysterious circumstances, Nikita starts digging through the deception to find the truth that is buried deep. As she delves deeper, she encounters supernatural events that challenge her rational thinking, turning personal grief into a gripping investigation.

Talking about the film, Sonakshi Sinha said, Nikita felt very real to me from the start. She’s dealing with loss, confusion, and a lot of unanswered questions, yet she keeps moving forward. What stayed with me was her quiet strength, the kind that doesn’t need to be loud to be powerful. Kussh’s direction gave me the space to explore those silences and emotions honestly. I’m thrilled about the film’s premiere on JioHotstar, which offers an incredible opportunity to connect with a much broader audience.”

Paresh Rawal added, “I was drawn to how understated this character Amar Dev is. It is a character very different from the ones I’ve portrayed in the past. He doesn’t raise his voice or announce his power, it comes through influence and presence. Playing someone who controls a room without obvious aggression was very interesting for me. I feel a film like this benefits from being watched on JioHotstar, where audiences can really settle in and absorb the details.”

Will Nikita find a way to debunk the unnatural and mysterious death of her brother or will her rationalism fail to protect her from the supernatural myth that consumed her brother?

Watch Nikita Roy, now streaming on JioHotstar!

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Management

Urinary tract infection in women
Urinary tract infection in women

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common bacterial infections, particularly affecting women. It occurs due to microbial invasion of the urinary tract and requires prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment to prevent complications. This paper briefly outlines the etiology, risk factors, clinical features, laboratory diagnosis, and management of UTI from a microbiological perspective.

episode of UTI during their lifetime. Risk factors include female gender, short urethra, sexual activity, poor perineal, hygiene, pregnancy, diabetes mellitus, catheterization, and advanced age.

UTIs occur at least 4 times more frequently in females than males.

Can you get a UTI from fingers?
Yes, it’s possible to get a UTI from your fingers. Your hands can pick up bacteria and other microorganisms whenever you touch a surface. You can accidentally introduce bacteria to your urethra when you go to the bathroom or during sexual acts, including masturbation or fingering. It’s a good idea to wash your hands before and after going to the bathroom
or having sex.

Clinical Features
Common symptoms include burning sensation during urination, increased frequency and urgency of urination, lower abdominal pain, and fever in complicated cases.

Cloudy or foul-smelling urine and hematuria are important indicators suggesting UTI.

Unusual urinary cloudiness (turbidity) and odor can be influenced by several factors, including:

  • Amorphous phosphates
  • Foods
  • Hormonal changes (eg, pregnancy)
  • Hydration status
  • Liver failure
  • Medications
  • Renal failure
  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Trimethylaminuria
  • Vaginal infections
  • Vitamins
  • Voiding dysfunction unrelated to infection

Foods that can cause urinary odor include:

  • Asparagus
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Fish (eg, salmon)
  • Garlic
  • Onions
  • Spices
  • Sulfur-containing foods

What tests will be done to diagnose a urinary tract infection
•Urinalysis
•Urine culture
•Ultrasound
•CT-scan
•Cystoscope

Diagnosis is confirmed by:

  • Urine routine examination
  • Microscopy for pus cells and bacteria
  • Urine culture and antibiotic sensitivity testing
*Prompt and accurate diagnosis is essential to guide
    appropriate antimicrobial therapy.

Management and Treatment

•Practice good hygiene:
Always wipe from front to back after a bowel movement (pooping) to avoid this. During your menstrual cycle, it’s also a good idea to regularly change your period products including pads and tampons. You should also avoid using any deodorants on your vagina.

•Drink plenty of fluids:
Drinking extra fluids — especially water — each day can help flush out bacteria from your urinary tract. Maximum six to eight glasses of water daily.

•Change your peeing habits:
Peeing frequently can reduce your risk of developing an infection, especially if you get UTIs a lot. You should also try to pee right before and right after having sex. Sex can introduce bacteria to your urethra, and peeing before and after sex helps flush it out. If you can’t pee, wash the area with warm water.

•Use a water-based lubricant during sex:
If you use lubricant during sex, make sure it’s water-based. You should also avoid spermicide if you have frequent UTIs.

•Change your clothing:
Tight-fitting clothing can create a moist environment, which promotes bacterial growth. You can try loose-fitting clothing and cotton underwear to prevent moisture from accumulating around your urethra.

•Medications:
If you’re postmenopausal healthcare provider may suggest a vaginal cream that contains estrogen. These creams may help reduce your risk of developing a UTI by changing the pH of your vagina.

Does cranberry juice prevent a urinary tract infection?
Cranberry juice that you can buy at the grocery store doesn’t prevent a UTI.
However, cranberry extract supplements (vitamin pills) may decrease your
chances of getting a UTI.

Can a UTI go away on its own?
Minor urinary tract infections can sometimes get better on their own.
However, most UTIs need antibiotics to go away. You absolutely need
antibiotics if you have a UTI as well as:

  • A fever.
  • Chills.
  • Nausea and vomiting.

How soon after treatment will people feel better?
Most people feel better within a few days after starting antibiotics to treat a UTI.

Complications
If untreated, UTIs may lead to serious complications such as pyelonephritis, renal damage, and urosepsis, particularly in elderly and immunocompromised patients. Age Factor UTIs are more common in sexually active women and elderly individuals due to hormonal changes, comorbidities, and impaired immunity.

Statement of Research

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common bacterial infection, especially among women, due to anatomical and physiological factors. Early and accurate diagnosis is essential for proper treatment and to prevent recurrence and long-term complications. This study focuses on the microbiological aspects of UTIs, including causative microorganisms, risk factors, clinical features, and laboratory diagnostic methods.

The research highlights the importance of urine examination, microscopy, and urine culture with antibiotic sensitivity testing in confirming diagnosis and guiding effective treatment. It also emphasizes rational antibiotic use and examines the role of age, gender, and predisposing conditions in the development and progression of UTIs, particularly in women.

Urinary tract infection is a common and preventable condition, especially in women. Early microbiological diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial to prevent recurrence and complications. The microbiology laboratory plays a key role in guiding effective treatment and improving patient outcomes.

Musical Therapy for Pregnant Women: Healing Through Sound for Mother & Baby

Musical Therapy in Pregnancy: Natural Stress Relief for Expecting Moms

Pregnancy is a beautiful journey, but it also brings emotional, physical, and mental changes. From mood swings and anxiety to sleep disturbances and body discomfort, an expecting mother goes through a lot. In recent years, musical therapy during pregnancy has emerged as a gentle, natural, and effective way to support maternal well-being and fetal development.

Music is more than entertainment—it is therapy. Let’s explore how music therapy benefits pregnant women, how it affects the unborn baby, and how to practice it safely at home.

What Is Musical Therapy?

Musical therapy (or music therapy) is a therapeutic approach that uses music—such as listening, singing, humming, or rhythmic sounds—to improve emotional, physical, and psychological health.

During pregnancy, music therapy focuses on:

  • Reducing stress and anxiety
  • Improving sleep quality
  • Enhancing emotional bonding with the baby
  • Supporting fetal brain development

It is safe, non-invasive, and can be practiced at home.

Benefits of Musical Therapy for Pregnant Women

1. Reduces Stress and Anxiety

Pregnancy hormones can increase feelings of fear, nervousness, and emotional sensitivity. Calm and soothing music helps lower cortisol (stress hormone) levels, creating a relaxed mental state for the mother.

Soft instrumental music, classical tunes, or nature sounds can instantly calm the nervous system.

2. Improves Sleep Quality

Insomnia is common during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters. Listening to slow-tempo music before bedtime helps:

  • Relax the mind
  • Slow down heart rate
  • Promote deeper and more restful sleep

Good sleep directly impacts the baby’s growth and the mother’s energy levels.

3. Enhances Emotional Well-Being

Music stimulates the release of dopamine and serotonin, also known as “feel-good hormones.” This helps in:

  • Reducing mood swings
  • Combating prenatal depression
  • Creating a positive emotional environment

A happy mother creates a healthy emotional space for the baby.

4. Strengthens Mother-Baby Bonding

From around 20 weeks of pregnancy, the baby can hear sounds from outside the womb. Regularly listening to music helps the baby recognize familiar sounds.

Many mothers notice that their baby responds to music with gentle movements. This creates a beautiful emotional connection even before birth.

5. Supports Fetal Brain Development

Research suggests that music may stimulate neural connections in the baby’s developing brain. Gentle rhythms and melodies can enhance:

  • Sensory development
  • Memory formation
  • Early auditory skills

Though music doesn’t make a baby “smarter” instantly, it supports healthy brain stimulation.

Best Types of Music for Pregnancy

Not all music has the same effect. Here are some safe and recommended music choices for pregnant women:

  • Classical music
  • Indian classical music
  • Instrumental music
  • Nature sounds
  • Soft devotional or spiritual music

NOTE: Avoid loud, aggressive, or high-bass music, as it may cause discomfort.

How to Practice Musical Therapy at Home

You don’t need a professional setup. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Choose a calm and quiet space
  2. Sit or lie down comfortably
  3. Play music at low to moderate volume
  4. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing
  5. Practice for 15–30 minutes daily

You can also hum or sing softly—it enhances relaxation and bonding.

When Is the Best Time to Listen to Music During Pregnancy?

  • Early morning for a positive start
  • Afternoon rest time
  • Before bedtime for better sleep
  • During prenatal yoga or meditation

Consistency matters more than duration.

Musical therapy for pregnant women is a simple yet powerful way to nurture both the mother and the unborn child. It promotes relaxation, emotional balance, and a deeper connection with the baby—all through the universal language of music.

In a world full of noise, let gentle melodies create peace within you and your growing life.

Lohri: A Festival of Warmth, Intention, and Thoughtful Gifting

Lohri 2026: Celebrating Warmth, Tradition & Thoughtful Gifting
Lohri 2026: Celebrating Warmth, Tradition & Thoughtful Gifting

As winter deepens and bonfires begin to glow across North India, Lohri arrives as a celebration of warmth, gratitude, and togetherness. Rooted in agrarian tradition, the festival marks the transition of seasons and honours rituals that have long brought families and communities together.

At its heart, Lohri is about sharing. Sesame seeds, jaggery, peanuts, and sugarcane are offered to the fire – symbols of abundance and hope. These gestures, repeated year after year, transform everyday elements into moments of meaning. Even as celebrations evolve, this sense of intention remains central to the festival.

In contemporary homes, Lohri is often expressed through thoughtful presentation. Trays laid out with winter delicacies, handcrafted boxes filled with festive treats, and carefully curated hampers become part of the ritual. Natural materials and warm textures feel especially at home during the season, reflecting Lohri’s grounded, earthy spirit.

Speaking about the significance of the festival, Arushi Kathurafounder of Pink Knots, a luxury experiential gifting brand based in South Delhi, shares: “Lohri has always been about warmth and intention. It is not about excess, but about how thoughtfully something is shared. Gifting during this time becomes part of the ritual itself – something that brings people together and lingers as a memory.”

At Pink Knots, this philosophy translates into gifting that complements the celebration rather than overpowering it. Wooden trays, festive hampers, and handcrafted packaging are designed to feel natural and considered, allowing the gift to blend seamlessly into the moment. Each element is curated with restraint, ensuring that beauty serves purpose.

Lohri also holds special meaning for new beginnings. Often celebrated for newborns and newly married couples, the festival becomes a marker of blessing and fresh chapters. Gifts exchanged during these moments are chosen with care, often becoming keepsakes associated with family traditions and shared stories.

Reflecting on this, Arushi adds: “The most meaningful gifts are the ones that feel personal – quietly thoughtful, carefully made, and deeply connected to the moment they are shared.”

As celebrations find space in modern settings – intimate studio gatherings, curated homes, and thoughtfully styled spaces – the essence of Lohri remains unchanged. It continues to invite people to slow down, gather around warmth, and participate fully in the moment.

As the fire crackles and sparks rise into the winter night, Lohri reminds us that true celebration lies not in grandeur, but in connection – gestures made with intention, gifts shared with care, and moments that stay long after the flames have dimmed.

Bhumi Satish Pednekkar & PETA India Gift Life-Size Mechanical Elephant to Kerala Temple

Kochi:
Renowned actor Bhumi Satish Pednekkar, in collaboration with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India, has gifted a life-size mechanical elephant named Cherukunnu Karthikeyan to Sree Subramania Kshetra Yogam in Kerala’s Thrissur district. The initiative promotes cruelty-free religious practices while ensuring the safety of both animals and devotees.

The mechanical elephant was officially unveiled by Sri Sivaswamy, Managing Director of KMD Group, during a ceremonial inauguration held at the temple. The event took place in the presence of the temple’s President Sri Sethumadhavan T C, Kshetram Thantri Sri Vijayan Karumathra, Kshetram Melsanthi Sri Sivaprasada, Temple Secretary Sri Bobish V V, along with temple devotees and the support of Sri A R Sreekumar, Thrissur District President of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The inauguration also featured a traditional Melam performance, marking a warm welcome for Cherukunnu Karthikeyan.

The mechanical elephant will now be used for temple rituals and ceremonies, allowing the temple to uphold tradition while avoiding the use of live elephants. The initiative was facilitated by PETA India in recognition of the temple’s compassionate decision to never own or hire live elephants. Cherukunnu Karthikeyan is the 18th mechanical elephant donated to temples across India by PETA India.

Actor Bhumi Satish Pednekkar, speaking on the occasion, said,
“I’ve always believed that every living being—each creation of God—deserves freedom, love, and care. The arrival of the mechanical elephant Cherukunnu Karthikeyan at the Subramania Kshetra Yogam beautifully shows how tradition and technology can unite with compassion, allowing real elephants to live freely in their natural homes, just as they were meant to.”

Sri Sivaswamy, Managing Director of KMD Group, highlighted the practical benefits of the initiative, stating,
“Mechanical elephants are excellent as they save animals, are safe for people, and are cost-effective. I am very happy to be here today and join this initiative by Actor Bhumi Satish Pednekkar and PETA India.”

Temple President Sri Sethumadhavan T C expressed gratitude for the donation, saying,
“We are grateful to receive Cherukunnu Karthikeyan as a sacred addition to our temple. This meaningful gift allows us to perform our rituals with compassion while ensuring safety for devotees and animals alike.”

Elephants are highly intelligent and social animals who suffer greatly in captivity. Many elephants used in temple processions endure physical abuse, prolonged chaining, lack of veterinary care, and unnatural living conditions. According to data compiled by the Heritage Animal Task Force, captive elephants killed 526 people in Kerala over a 15-year period. One of the most frequently used elephants in Kerala’s festival circuit, Thechikkottukavu Ramachandran, has reportedly killed 13 individuals during captivity.

The mechanical elephants are three meters tall, weigh around 500 kilograms, and are made using rubber, fibre, metal, foam, mesh, and steel. Powered by five motors, they can move their head, ears, eyes, tail, and trunk, spray water, and even carry a seat on their back. Mounted on a wheelbase, they can be easily moved during temple rituals and processions by simply plugging into an electrical source.

PETA India, whose guiding principle states that “animals are not ours for entertainment,” continues to campaign against animal cruelty and speciesism.
